ARTIST TALK: MEL CHIN

“the NAME of the PLACE is I LIKE it like THAT”: Maps in My Art

What:
The inaugural event of Communograph: Mapping Community Through Creative Action features Houston native Mel Chin, an internationally known artist who explores the ways art can provoke greater social awareness and responsibility. Though clas- sically trained, Chin makes art that is both analytical and poetic, evading easy classification. Alchemy, botany, and ecology are a few of the disciplines that intersect in his work. Chin insinuates art into unlikely places, including destroyed homes, toxic landfills, and even popular television. Unconventional and politically engaged, his projects also challenge the idea of the artist as the exclusive creative force behind an artwork. Chin received a BA from Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1975, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1988 and 1990.
